Wednesday

Cinque Terre, Italy

What an adventure! We went to Cinque Terre on the Liguarian Sea for the weekend. If you translate Cinque Terre it stands for 5 Terraces. These Terraces are actually villages built into the cliffs and seaside near Genova, Italy.
It was an amazing weekend. I went swimming in the Liquarian Sea several times. It is much more salty than the Atlantic. When I return home, I plan on finding out the salinity of both oceans as you could literally feel the denseness of the Sea. Also, I could float like a bobber. It was such a wonderful experience. I was also able to pick up a cheap pair of goggles to view the sea life which consisted of many schools of fish, many colors; just breathtaking....which takes me to my next investment....a snorkel...which I did not buy, but will on my next trip.
There is also a hiking path that connects all the villages through the mountainside. We made this journey from Monterossa to Vernazza (about 3 hours)...not for the faint of heart. I swear it was uphill the whole way but I was reminded that there were some very nice trails that were about 2 feet wide, several million steps both up and down and the lovely beach of Vernazza to swim in upon our final descent from our hike.
We head onto Verona to explore the Colleseum and Roman ruins.

Tuesday

On to Verona and another International School

We leave Zagreb after an awesome adventure here. I had my picture taken in front of a statue of Nikola, Tesla, who was born in Croatia. Anyone who is not familiar with this brilliant inventor; he was a very cool inventor who had 7 of his patents used by Marcone for the first electrical production station. He also worked for Edison who promised big bonuses that never happened...apparently, he was very smart but lacked the business skills.

We have an 11:35 train tonight from Zagreb back to Venice and then on to Verona where I have two meetings or two shows (the meetings were set up by our friend Giuliana) so I know I have to hit the ground running tomorrow. We did manage to get a sleeper car this trip so we're looking forward to a good night.

We'll be in Verona until this weekend where we'll work our way towards the coast of Italy and then on to Germany.

This is a wonderful adventure, thank you to everyone who is holding down the various posts of my life back home.

More pics soon!

September 7th, Zagreb, Croatia

WOW!
We left Venice last night at 9:20 pm for a night train to Zagreb, Croatia for arrival at 4:15am. It was very interesting.

We shared a seating compartment with a young woman named Jessica who was backpacking around Europe, Turkey, Slovania and Croatia. She was from Australia and her travel friend had to leave her for an awesome job opportunity in London. She had traveled through Italy by herself and was going to a youth hostel in Slovenia before traveling on to Croatia. As parents, Radioactive Rob, DNA Donna and I gave her our phone numbers as well as the phone number of our friend in Croatia... She assured us she would touch base with us and let us know her status on the rest of her journey...we look forward to hearing from her.

We did not secure a sleeping compartment as there was a communication issue at the train station so we followed the scenery in the dark through Slovenia without sleep and a Croatian gentleman twisting and turning in the seat next to me trying to get comfortable. At one point there was snow on the ground (just a dusting) as we headed through the mountains.

Upon arriving in Croatia, we had our passports checked on the train. It could have been 1945 as the light in our compartment did not work, it was very dark and we could not understand the Policia who were checking our documents in the dark by flashlight while speaking to each other in Croatian.

We were able to sleep for about an hour after we arrived at Dani's home. It was fabulous! We then got up and I put my "game face" on for an assembly at the American International School of Zagreb. It was a really good show with a wonderful group of students and staff. The school has signed on for After School Science Clubs to start ASAP so we begin our International leap into Croatia! How exciting!!!

We leave Croatia tomorrow evening where we plan on securing a sleeper car for our 9 hour journey to Verona, Italy. I have two meetings there Wednesday so we are really clocking some travel time on the trains, planes and automobiles. (about 9 hours on plane, 21 hours on train and several hours in various taxi's). We look forward to Verona as we will stay at our friend Giuliana's Bed and Breakfast. I will post pics and a link...it's a beautiful tobacco warehouse that was turned into a B&B. It is one of our favorite places.

I will try to post pics now...I need to become more computer savvy.

Saturday

Science Explorers goes to Rome, Italy

CiaĆ²,
Jupiter Jen has completed her first 4 shows in Rome. We took lots of pictures which we will upload as soon as our computer is working. There is so much science to think about. We saw so much ancient history. Simple machines must have been amazing. Looking at these structures and wondering how they put the stone in place is just mind boggling.
I am at an internet cafe as our high tech computer is not charging here. The pictures are wonderful but they look just like all of our shows...the children are having fun. The international schools are British based so everyone spoke English but most spoke 3 or 4 languages. It makes me feel very inadequate with my language barrier of only speaking English.
We started our tour at an International School in Southern Rome called the Southland International School of Rome. The principal, Mr. Deryk Wilson is just fabulous and very focused on bringing the best resources to the school. He sat in on all the assemblies and was just so supportive...all went well.
We left Rome this morning for an almost 5 hour trip to Venice. We travel by water taxi here as there are no cars and it is surrounded by water.
We head to Zagreb, Croatia for a show tomorrow. The only train is at 920pm and will arrive at 415am in Zagreb. I will do the show on Monday and head to Verona on Tuesday as we have an assembly in Verona on Wednesday.
It is very exciting to be here and presenting programs that are virtually non existent here.
I will write again, hopefully, we can upload some pictures. They are wonderful.
Stay tuned,

Jupiter Jen heads North to Westerly, Rhode Island

I start my 2009/2010 Ametek Foundation Sparks Interest with Science Explorers gig in Westerly, Rhode Island this weekend. For those of you unfamiliar with our outreach program; The Ametek Foundation has been partnering with the S.P.A.R.K.S. Foundation to bring science literacy to ALL children, regardless of socioeconomic status. Over the last 7 years, the S.P.A.R.K.S. Foundation in cooperation with Science Explorers and the Ametek Foundation,  has delivered 5 or 10 week classroom visitation programs to schools in Pittsburgh, Newark, Delaware, Oak Ridge, TN, Rochester, NY, Lancaster, PA and this year we're heading to Westerly, Rhode Island.
This program has two distinct benefits. First, it gets elementary aged children excited and familiar with science concepts and objectives. Second, it gets the elementary school teachers excited and comfortable with science.
I've never been to Westerly, Rhode Island so I'm off for a new adventure before I head to the other side of the pond!
